Panic of Totalitarianism – Artist talk

Fr. 13.04.2018 (18:00)
Schillerpromenade 4, 12049 Berlin

Colombia is a capitalist and democratic country, however, this condition has not been reflected in the equality and mutual restriction between the branches of public power. On the contrary, since the beginning of the 21st century, a new political force has emerged that aims to establish itself as a totalitarian party headed by its idealized leader, AUV. This party called CD, through propaganda to infuse panic in society against the possible rise of another totalitarian regime invented by them, Castro-Chavismo (term that denotes the communist ideology of Cuba’s Castro and Venezuela’s Chávez), but what they really hide in their hate messages is the establishment of a right-wing totalitarianism.

The CD with a warlike character and championing the restoration of the values of the conservative society, is directed to establish a new regime and proclaim AUV as the dictator of what will be the New Totalitarian Republic of Colombia, continuing the doctrine of its founder Laureano Gómez that caused the “La Violencia” (The Violence) era. However, a citizen on foot, inspired by the brave work of Captain Berlin, decides to embody its banners of struggle and go to look for him in the city of his namesake, with the goal of learning from his wisdom and experience in the struggles against the totalitarian regimes created after the Second World War. However, time has played havoc with the ideals and forces of a hero, leaving him internal conflicts for not feeling indispensable and falling into oblivion.

His artistic work –which usually confronts the viewer in a sensory way, subjecting it to anesthetic processes, whether due to stimuli overload, or the absence of them– seek to reflect on the archetype of progress in contemporary societies and how it is distortedwhen put into practice in different countries and territories, generating conflicts, syncretism, appropriations and dystopias of what is believed to be, a model of developed society.

About El Kruce:

EL KRUCE is a transdisciplinary platform for the exchange and development of projects and initiatives of all those that, wherever they come from, whatever they do, with their own social acts they deeply question the colonial nature of their knowledge, their body and their being.

The interest of EL KRUCE is to strengthen its artistic residency program through an increasingly wide network of alliances and agreements with various artistic residency programs in Latin America whose motivations and processes are actively linked to the interests and guidelines of our program. In addition to these exchanges, EL KRUCE, in agreement with local organizations, has begun the preparation of a network of “residences in context” throughout Colombia.
