Strings / audio-visual installation

7-10. June 2018
TopLab: Schillerpromenade 4, 12049

The string is one of the basic tools for creating music. Simple in assumption and complicated in the diversity of use. When referring to visual arts, we can build an analogy between the string and the line, because just as the string is the sound source, the line is the source of the image. Taking this parallel as a guiding principle, Lena Czerniawska and Adam Pultz Melbye’ audio-visual installation Strings bridge the experiential divide between the visible and audible world.

The collaboration between Czerniawska and Melbye was initially spawned by their collaboration on Measures, Melbye’s recent solo double bass release. The physical album consists of vacuum sealed broken bass strings with download codes and artwork by Czerniawska, each item being hand made by the two artists.

The four day exhibition of Strings will feature a rare multi double bass performance as well as a talk between the artists and open discussion with the audience:

7.06 // 19:00
INAUGURATION of the installation

9.06 // 20:30
PERFORMANCE for multi double bass

10.06 // 16:00

Living in Berlin since 2013, Adam Pultz Melbye (DK) is an active performer as a solo artist and with numerous international projects. A fascination with resonance, acoustics and psychoacoustics has led to the development of unique instrumental techniques and approaches to the double bass that causes the instrument to sing and vibrate in original and unexpected ways. Additionally, his exploration of electronics and amplification is part of an ongoing research project to investigate the intimate sonic topology of his instrument. As a composer, Adam has written acoustic and electroacoustic music for smaller and larger ensembles as well as theatre, dance, installation and film. Formerly a member of the label and collective Barefoot Records, in 2016, Adam started his own release platform Noema.
